Most of the time, boot record problems are a direct result of damaged or corrupted Master Boot Record. Once you’re in Command Prompt, you can start fixing the boot record error using the “bootrec” command. NOTE: The procedure below can be applied on Windows Vista, 7, and 8/8.1. Select Command Prompt from the list of options to open the Command Prompt window. NOTE: If you are using Windows 8/8.1, press the or + keys while booting, then select Troubleshoot, and then Advanced Settings. STEP 3: When the System Recovery Options window appears, select the operating system you want to recover, then click Next. Most likely, you won’t be able to reach the Windows desktop and open your command prompt from there if your computer is experiencing a boot record problem. So if in case you come across with a boot record error, here’s how you can address it by just entering a command or two in the Windows Command Prompt. However, Windows doesn’t provide any sort of graphical user interface in order to fix boot record issues in just a few clicks. Boot record errors are purely software errors and can easily be fixed using the Windows built-in tools and installation media. This happens when there are possible corrupted or deleted boot files, removing Linux operating system from a dual-boot computer, mistakenly installing the older version of boot record, and so on. At some point in time, you may have come across boot record errors that prevent your Windows from starting up properly.
